Exhibit Visit

On November 14, I went to the Whitney Museum and saw the Steve Wolfe exhibit "Steve Wolfe on Paper". At first I was very confused by the works because I thought it was just framed book covers, but then I went back and read about the prints. His use of trompe l'oeil is amazing! The book covers and records look ridiculously like the real thing, but they're screenprints and other types of prints. He got all the details down to worn binding, bent corners, and scratched off color. The records looked like actual records you could put right on a record player and listen to. I was super impressed by Wolfe's works and am curious about these types of prints because I know very little about them.

A series I saw at the Whitney (in the permanent collection) that really stuck with me was Duane Michals's Things are Queer from 1973. It's a series of 9 gelatin silver prints that start (and end) with a dingy bathroom. The black and white images are creepy and stark but are clear in what they are trying to get across. I love the way you just naturally move from one image to the next, and when you get to the last one you stop and have to go back to the beginning. And then you have to go through them all over again. The images work well together and have a beginning and an end, but at the same time are like a continuous loop.

Print Series/Artist Book

Intro./Artist Statement
The project seemed like quite a challenge at first.
Creating a print from seven random words is not easy.
But once I started it all sort of fell into place.

As I am not a pro in Photoshop,
the first print took a very long time to put together.
But by the third print, it was much easier.

The concept of the book is kind of odd
But it was not supposed to be so creepy.
Part of the fun of making it was that it was so different.

Words to Images.
(coming soon....)

Chapter 1.
There once was a sunflower field full of happy goats.
But one day the sky got dark and stormy.
A big mean goat wanted to control the field!

The little goats tried to hide in the sunflowers.
The big mean goat had a big scary knife.
The goats were frozen with fear!

All the goats ever wanted was their sunflower field.
They thought it would be theirs forever.
But the big goat decided it was HIS field!

Chapter 2.
The big mean goat made all the kids leave the sunflowers.
The big mean goat put a fence around the field.
They had to say goodbye to their home.

The little goats had nowhere to go.
They missed their sunflowers.
They were very sad.

All the little goats walked together.
They hoped they would find more sunflowers.
But they were lost and scared.

Chapter 3.
The big mean goat gave the little goats a choice.
They could live without their sunflowers.
Or they could die and become a sunflower.

Some of the little goats were afraid to die.
They decided to choose life.
These goats died of sadness.

The other goats chose to die.
Their heads were cut off and put on sunflower stalks.
Thus they were forever in a sunflower field.

Back Cover.
This series came together by itself.
After the first print, the second just made sense.
And the third print was a logical conclusion.

An accompanying children's book also made sense.
What kid does not love flowers and cute goats?
They just usually do not die at the end...

Two influences for this book, because of their kids' book style were
Night Crawlers on the Web by Johanna Drucker
and How to Humiliate Your Peeping Tom by Susan Baker.

Recipe Idea

My How to Book is going to be about how to be as weird as me. Everybody has quirks and people love to make fun of my quirks so I thought I would teach people how to be as weird and quirky as I am.

Art

This is a picture I did in pastels a couple of years ago...
